I recommend soft, timeless tones like whites, pale pinks, and light blues. These shades photograph beautifully and create that classic, heirloom look. Subtle patterns are perfectly fine—think delicate toile or light embroidery—just keep them minimal so the focus stays on your child.


What to Wear for Heirloom Portraits: Boys

Traditional heirloom portraits for boys typically feature:

  • Smocked or button-on outfits – A beautifully classic and polished choice (and I love when those sweet arm and leg rolls peek through).
  • Jon jons or shortalls – Ideal for younger boys, especially paired with a Peter Pan collar shirt underneath.
  • Collared shirts with simple detailing – Soft neutrals or pastel tones work best.

For older boys, I recommend a traditional collared shirt rather than a Peter Pan collar for a more age-appropriate, refined look.
